are the brook trout found in the park, kin to the monster brookies found in british columbia etc. or are the park brook trout their own species, genetically growth disabled,no matter how nutrient and bug loaded their home waters are..

I don't think they have monster brookies in British Colombia.... unless they were put there by people.

Those freaking Canadians have been doing alot of weird science on trout, particularly rainbows whose eggs are manipulated with chemicals thus altering their genetic make-up... THEY MAKE TRIPLOIDS in BC and put them in lakes & ponds that grow to enormous size and poor shape.

You must be thinking LABRADOR or Eastern Canada and natural brookies that commonly grow to 5 or more pounds..

Brook trout up in Maine were found to be genetically distinct from one pond to another provided the populations had never been disturbed by stocking or migration.

They are all kin; but some have more freckles.. and they tend to get larger as you go further north.

Brook trout are actually CHAR (which require really cold water to survive) and I'm not certain how scientist explain how they got so far south... Isn't it nice that God sprinkled a few of them into the mountain streams?

I am genetically distinct too according to my eight siblings!

The size of brook "trout" like any of the other trout species is mostly determined by environment and food source. Matt Kulp told me once that he heard of a study where they took a small mountain brookie and kept it in a tank under ideal conditions. They ended the experiment when it got to 17" and had pretty much outgrown the tank.

The streams where our brookies live don't have enough food to allow them to grow really large.

The brook trout found in the park and the Southern states is a distinct species, different from the one found in Maine, Quebec, etc. There are some hybrids in some streams in the Tellico area.

Go to this link for an interesting bit on the Appalachian brook trout.
