View Full Version : The Duck River and a Girl

My niece Abigail is 11 (or is she 10?) and wanted me to take her fishing. So, of course I loaded up my gear in the truck and picked her up Saturday morning. We loaded her bait casting rod up and off we went. It was a short drive of about an hour to the tailwater.

We started out about 500ft below the dam and started wading down river. I managed to catch a few stockers and one decent bow. She decided she wanted to try fly fishing and caught on right away! She was getting line out and hitting targets within a few minutes.

She even managed to get one on! We fished hard for about 4 hours and became tired and too hot as it was about 95 degrees today. We waded back up to the trail down the side of the river and headed home. It was so much fun watching her cast and getting that fish on. I think she may even come back

Man you are brave to go out in this heat. Great job getting your niece involved in the sport!

Thanks, David! Yeah, I held up better than I thought I would. I put on some SPF 50 though. She was a natural...such a smart girl. She said she wanted to go back so I may have to invest in another pair of breathable waders and some boots for her.

Hey; what size waders? I may have a pair of canvass that will fit her.

I have no idea, Corbo. I think she's around 5'2" right now...maybe 100lbs? You got anything close to that?

That's great! She is really laying out the line there, good for her. I hope she finds something that will keep her interested for life like we have.

Out of curiosity, why waders with the heat? I'm guessing the water is dirty?

I've found that even in the middle of summer that kids find the water, coming off the bottom of the lake from the dam, too cold to stand for long. It's easier to put them in waders and just keep them hydrated. I'm usually fine in breatables if I bring some water. Now, in a pond, or warm water section of the river, I ditch the waders.

Gotcha. I have never done any tailwater fishing so I never thought about that. On the other hand I think all of the guys over on the trophy water at Cherokee last week were just trying to look cool because I was the only one wet wading! There were a good many guys and girls over there and most that I saw had on chest waders.

I find the water coming out of the park cold. I wear waders if I am going to be in above my thighs. Not certain how cold it is in that area though.

The West Prong LPR is in my backyard; I live just off Pittman-Center Road so if you were headed to Greenbriar I could leave the waders outdoors for you to pick up along the way. Also have some wading shoes that may fit her. Could also mail them to you if you want. It is a shame they get no use.
