When I hear a northern politician, gab on WNBC about how the National Park Service, and the Parks are too expensive to maintain, and how there should be cutbacks in Park Services and Ranger salaries...then with the next breath, talk about giving extra food stamps to the food stampers for dog food...it just burns me up..truth is,the Parks are used and appreciated by us,the semi-educated,educated,job holding, tax paying USA'ians..the National Parks are ours,I get kind of hot when politicians want to include the Parks in welfare benefit packages. It's all about votes,I was dum enough to believe the National Parks were special enough to be above the low-life politicians who inhabit and rule our lives....

Well duh! When they were talking about what would be cut... For glacier national they were going to delay opening the main road at a cost to the park itself that would be in the millions. What on earth would they do that for if it wasn't to make a point. Talk about trying to make things worse for no reason.

Anybody been able to find any info about which 5 'remote campgrounds and picnic areas' will be closed?

Has anyone other than I heard that Great Smoky Mountains Association is being forbidden from buying anything... even things (books, etc.) to SELL?!?!

I am going to ask others in GSMA if this is true. If it is and if the edict came from the NPS, it would be much like the home office of a company with a viable market telling their manufacturing site management to stop buying raw materials because of budget cuts. It would be like corporate saying, “we have enough to worry about with the budget thing, we don't want to have to deal with a pesky revenue stream."

This is the PEOPLE'S PARK... do what you want when you want.

Closures be ****ed; chances are nobody will areest you and if they try... resist.

Obama spends more a week in jet fuel visiting admirers around OUR country than it takes to maintain these camping sites for a year.

Don't complain if you voted for him.

Arrived early and I can't remember a day that the Hiwassee fished so well. After a couple of tough months in tough conditions, I was excited to get 2 of my 3 boys away from the XBox and out on the water.

Conditions were excellent at the start of the day and hatches were everywhere around us until the wind picked up to around 20 mph.

I with fly rod and the boys, I made sure were rigged up with spinning rods and for them the "Ole Mepps Minnow" and Rapala proved to be valuable tools today.

Looks to me you brought the post back from political rheteric to the subject of fishing;) I for one appreciate that.

Thanks for sharing your day on the water with your boys. I paddled Big Laurel Creek in NC yesterday, and noticed a ton of blue wing activity, and also some larger bug that I think were March Browns. Noticed during a swim that the water was still REALLY cold:rolleyes:

Breck... a fantastic post by a fantastic dad. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I'm pretty much with you DP. As to any adverse affect this or future cutbacks, real or perceived, might have on Park fishing on future generations, officials would be hard pressed to diminish promoting it and even hiking to brook trout waters any more than has already occurred over the years. (May have been a small bump in '06?). I saw no more than two or three different books on the subject at Sugarlands VC Friday.

Except for that exhibited at better galleries in the region, even the imagery of this amazing wildlife is largely absent from the view of most park visitors. After painstakenly scrolling through scores of absolutely amazing photos by professionals "liked" at www.facebook.com/GreatSmokyMountainsAssociation (https://www.facebook.com/GreatSmokyMountainsAssociation), I found only two (2) of trout. They are perfectly framed and illuminated, colorful rainbows in streambeds presented at "Natures Photography by Valerie E Miller (https://www.facebook.com/Valerieemiller53)." (I commended Valerie via FB and asked if she has photographed any of the natives.) There is no fault on the part of the GSMA Facebook administrator that fish pics are pretty much MIA. (I've met her and she does a fantastic job). It's sorta hard to post pitchers what ain't been took yet.

sorry about my original post--i was less than compassionate about the remarks made by politicians looking for votes, that was a mistake--we have the best national park system in the world--what a silly compromise,to change the subject of my post, just so we can forget the reason the National Park System was relentlessly established. The establishing days of the National Parks havelong since past, the Parks were founded as a reward for middle classed Americans, who worked hard, raised families, educated their kids, and died in distant wars..I guess, today, hiding your head in the sand is about values long since lost.....

I haven't fished, but I boated Lower Abrams today, and saw the biggest blue wing hatch I have ever seen. Must have been 20+ thousand bugs sitting in the calmer water. I took some pics with the point and shoot and will post if they turn out.

Unfortunately I didn't see one fish rise:frown: I didn't take a temp reading but I would guess upper 40's.
