Metallica was rockin' on the radio
Free and easy down the road I go

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010102_zpse90e843d.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010102_zpse90e843d.jpg.html)

What a morning it started out to be. I woke up 15 minutes before the alarm, fed the dog, ate a good breakfast, and I didn't even have to brush my teeth. I have no idea what I was listening to in the car last night, but the radio was turned up when I cranked it over. No problems, Ride the Lightening was playing. The only better start to the day that I can think of would be if they were playing Beastie Boys or some Willie Nelson.

I was headed fishing.

I got to the trailhead and the sun was just cracking through when I started my hike in.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010103_zps1ccc19f7.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010103_zps1ccc19f7.jpg.html)

I was the only car at the trailhead and had a hard time walking past miles of perfectly fishable water. I knew that it hadn't been touched in a whole night and would fish good, but I've always got to see what's over the next ridge. I walked a couple miles and decided to cut in right here, I may just find a river, even if it's little.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010104_zpsae587b1c.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010104_zpsae587b1c.jpg.html)

After fighting my way through the rhododendron, I pop out right on the water. Man, this spot looks fishable.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010105_zps4a8c9024.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010105_zps4a8c9024.jpg.html)

You'll have to forgive the quality of the photo. It was still pretty darn dark.

Two casts into the day, and I catch this. First fish of the day.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010106_zps38d3b0cc.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010106_zps38d3b0cc.jpg.html)

I hate posting such crappy pics, but you've always got to take a picture of your first fish. It might be your only fish and without a picture, it's just a story.

But, don't worry, I went on to fish more water that looked just as good as the last.

And I caught more fish that looked just like the first.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010111_zps787e2d60.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010111_zps787e2d60.jpg.html)

A couple dozen or more of them actually.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010113_zpsca102dcb.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010113_zpsca102dcb.jpg.html)

This is a pretty stupid place for someone to put their net. I bet they forgot they sat it here. I think I'll grab it and drop it off at LRO so they can pick it up if they read this.

When I get old, I want to grow old and gnarly like I imagine this tree did.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010120_zps92f8e10d.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010120_zps92f8e10d.jpg.html)

I also want to wear shorts with black socks and be able to say my opinion at the exact moment it hits my mind.

I even managed to catch several like this.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010122_zps45c476b8.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010122_zps45c476b8.jpg.html)

Out of places like this.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010119_zpse085da41.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010119_zpse085da41.jpg.html)

It looks like the hat is lucky and will be traveling the 2,000 miles to Wyoming with me next month.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010126_zpse4caca3c.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010126_zpse4caca3c.jpg.html)

The lucky fly of the day was a size 14 elk hair caddis in a sparkling orange color.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010132_zpsba38a71e.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010132_zpsba38a71e.jpg.html)

That's all I had with me.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010130_zps88dd2619.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010130_zps88dd2619.jpg.html)

I see all these pictures of these extremely organized fly boxes and I think to myself "I want one o those". So, I figured I'd get another new flybox and organize all my flies and not carry any of my other boxes. Well, I didn't get very far.

Oh yea, I caught one of these also.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010110_zpsd5d9ab66.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2013%20Fishing/8-11-2013/P1010110_zpsd5d9ab66.jpg.html)

Cheers!

Glad you had a good day. Definitely worth the hike considering the campsites have been closed for so long now that pressure must really be down:biggrin:

How big was that Rainbow 13-14? And that Brown was pretty sweet:biggrin:

Those 2 fish alone must have been enough to make your day. Bet you there is a newby out there kicking themselves right now:rolleyes:

Congratz on the great day of fishing and thanks for an outstanding post. I can't wait to catch a brown like that in water like that

I did run into a bear. But, I don't think it was the one that has been terrorizing the campsites. It was getting late in the day and I came to a spot that smelled terribly of dead fish and dog pee. I knew what the smell was and backed out, crossing the river. Sure enough, just 10 feet from where I was standing, stood a bear. It got up on its hind legs, looked at me and took off. I don't think the problem bears normally run like that. It's my opinion, but I think bears are worse than my dog and roll in anything that could possibly smell bad. But, everyone that I've ever smelled, smelled like dog pee.

I was thinking the rainbow was around 12". But, if someone wants to think 14", I'll take it!!!

It's a great fish any way you look at it:biggrin:

Nathan and his Biology Professor buddy saw the dart crew on the hunt there a few weeks back. One naughty bear took 2 packs the day before:eek:
Guess they really are closed for a reason:rolleyes:

So do they close campsites down until they get the bear, how does it work Ducky?

I really don't know much how it specifically works. I remember getting a memo released to VIP's(VolunteersInPark) that stated how many bear incidents there were that previous year. I was shocked to see that 2 people had discharged rounds at bears:eek: Don't think either case was justified:frown:. There were hundreds of "Bear Incidents though", and apparently they dart many a bear per year. I'm sure others might be able to chime in with more:smile:

I think I would be a little more prone to discharge rounds at the stupid people that try and get as close as possible to the bears just to take a picture than I would the bears themselves.

Nice score on the brown. I'm getting Brown fever just knowing fall is coming soon.

Based on my success so far in the Smokies (or severe lack thereof), after I saw this report, I took yoga so that I could learn to bend my leg so I could kick myself in the rear!:frown:. But after I saw that huge brown, I couldn't stay sad. That was a beautiful fish!

Great post & pics Buzz as always. Congrads on the Brown and I'm glad you and "The Bear" parted ways without incident. After you and I saw that bear a couple of years back, I've been carrying bear spray ever since. It may or may not work but it makes me feel better.

I wish I would have thought to call you Saturday night. If you'd been able to get a yard pass I could have headed south and we could have fished some of your streams.

I'm glad that bear didn't act like the one we ran across. I didn't have someone with bad knees with me that I could have knocked to the ground and outran to the car.

LOL!! Your right, it wouldn't take much to beat me back to the car. At least now the bear would have a pepper flavor to it's meal.

As for fishing, just give me call when you get some free time and we'll head out.

Also, I've thought about a three day weekend backpacking trip this fall in that area. If you see a free weekend around your Wyoming trip and your interested, just let me know.
