That may depend on how many people show up to break through the gates.

nothing's....... impossible.....

My prediction is there will be a one-two month budget patch on Wednesday night... then we can start having this discussion all over again at Thanksgiving, and then again at Christmas.... etc.

I sure hope you are right. My trip down is coming up in 3 weeks and this is only my 4th trip down the whole year.

The governor had a press conference yesterday about it. He understands the importance of the park being open in October. I think they will get it open ASAP, but I doubt by Thursday. Maybe I will be surprised. It seems the state governments are a little closer to the desires of the people.

$60,000/day to keep the Park open. Blount County and Sevier County are both willing to help with the cost. Additionally, the money can be wired directly to the feds. With the leaves starting to change, they will want it open by the weekend. I bet an announcement to open the TN side of the park will come soon as well as an open date.

They are not sure how long the park will be open. The agreement between states and counties is only for a few days. So, Lauxier I hope you can enjoy a weekend in the park. I wish I could be there, but I have to be in Atlanta for the weekend.

Good luck if you are trying to get a backcountry permit:

Backcountry Camping Reservations:
The online backcountry reservation system is unavailable due to the shutdown, so backcountry reservations are currently being accepted by phone at (865) 436-1297. Because of the uncertainly as to whether or not the park will remain open past October 20th, reservations are only being accepted for trips beginning on or before Saturday, October 19. A high volume of calls is anticipated. If you reach voice mail when calling, please leave your name and phone number so that your call can be returned as soon as possible.

I started a new thread in the "In the Backcountry" area, but worth adding to this thread as well..

https://smokiespermits.nps.gov/index.cfm is up and running. It went online sometime between 6 AM and 9 AM EST

I made a reservation and got my order number. When I entered my order number on the page https://smokiespermits.nps.gov/gsmbctransactions.cfm

I received and error, "Your transaction information could not be found"

I called the backcountry office (865)436-1297 and Ranger James W emailed me the PDF Reservation form.
