Hello everyone, I am trying to make plans for my friend and I to hike into campsite #17 in the next few weeks. Our plan was to fish upstream of the campground and also fish the horseshoe one day. Does anyone have any current fishing info on this area? How has it fished over the last few years? How has the lower section (below the falls) fished vs. the upper section and the horseshoe? I have heard that the otters have had an impact on this area as far as the fishing is concerned. I would rather not waste a trip on an area that is knowingly not good fishing. Any information or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

My brother and I fished the upper portion last April and did fairly well. A dry/dropper rig worked for us. We did not fish the horseshoe.

We came in via the loop road (ok coming in, busy coming out)...at least there were no bear-jams to shut it down completely.

I think I would rather watch fly fishing on TV in lieu of fighting the Cades Cove crowd.

There are many, MANY wonderful streams and campgrounds in the Smokies that do not require you to drive through downtown traffic to get to them.

They can have all my part of Abrams Creek, and I'm beginning to feel the same about Little River.

JoelO,

Thanks for the reply. That is all I wanted to hear. Now I can start planning.

Allow plenty of time to fish the horseshoe and check the weather before you go. Not a good place to get caught if the water comes up, and once you get in you are pretty much committed to fishing the whole thing. Fishing is generally much better above the falls.
