Im going flyfishing at Bald River Falls, and was wondering where the best place to flyfish is and what are some good flies that work?

I was down that way a couple months ago and I would suggest skipping the falls and going up North River instead. If you decide to do the falls area, I'd take the trail and hike up Bald River at least two miles first before trying any fishing. North river? I'd go up to about campsite number 3 and start there. You might want to drive up to campsite 6 and work your way up from there. When I say "a couple months ago", I'm talking about late May/early June. The water was low and crystal clear then. I can only imagine how low and clear it is now.

Good luck and tight lines!

This was back in June when we were there and water levles weren't very good then. I imagine they're worse now. We were getting the most activity on size 14 - 18 caddis flies, Parachute Adams, Thunderheads, and tiny Blue Wing Olives.

I didn't try Bald River since a number of people who guide down that way steered me away from it. We worked our way up North River hitting a number of different campsite sections, ending up way past campsite 6.

Hope this helps!

The North is a good river. You might also try the North and South Fork of the Citico. It requires some hiking which is always a good thing for the fishing ;)

I fished the North River earlier this year and in addition to the previously mentioned flies, I did very well on Tellicos (#12-#14) and small gold-ribbed hares ear nymphs (#18-#20). If you fish the Bald River, definately go high up. Hope this helps!

I have fished the North a dozen or so times this year and have generally found the fish not to be overly picky. They'll hit just about any dry fly as long as you get a decent deaddrift. I use stimulators and caddis patterns size 12 to 16. If you're getting refusals, drop down a size or two and you'll probably start hooking up.
I think far more important is stealth. Stay low and wade carefully. These fish will spook easily with the water levels being what they are. My last trip up there was about a month ago the stream was very low then and gin clear. The fish were more than willing to hammer dry flies, but man you had to be sneaky to get a shot at them.
Good luck! I hope you post a report on your trip.

Citico, the place russ mentioned is the place im going. Also, should i take my waders with me or just leave them, since the water is so low?

I wouldn't worry about waders. *Just wear your wading boots and a pair of shorts and you should be fine. *I personally wet wade starting in March or April and last year was still wet wading in November. *If you were going in winter though you will want your waders. *Good luck and enjoy your trip!

I don't know about that.....I got a friend who has never let anything stop him from fishing.....including leaving his waders at home in January! ;D

Hey Rocky, you old dog! Good to hear from you. I think my days of wet wading in January are about over. My feet start aching just thinking about it! Hope you are doing well. I'm guessing you're pretty busy this time of year.

15yroldflyfisher,

I'm with Plateau - leave the waders at home. That water will be downright refreshing in the heat.

TGoodwin, what colors of stimulators do you prefer to use, and would you or anybody know what the best sizes of topwater dry flies to use?
