What did you have in mind by - "off beaten path?" Give us a few more details so that we might give you some suggestions.

There are pleny of places you could go in the smokies that are way out there. There are some streams i wanna try this spring that are way back in the woods. I love getting away from everyone! Anyways, are you gonna set up base near townsend???

Off the beaten path-- Me and Molly dont care if we see NO ONE the whole time. Mmm, I wanna hike back a little bit and fish, maybe for some brookies (might be kinda early). I wanna pack my box with nothing but dries, and I wanna cast to non selective fish. Dont really wanna wear my waders, I can wet wade, it doesnt bother me. It would be alright to see a few fishermen or hikers, I like talking to people. I wanna set up in or near Townsend..I hate that drive from P. Forge and the drive from Sevierville. I just wanna hike in and fish in the Smokies....

Brookie country the first of march can be kind of hairy! The weather can be fickle and unless you are prepared could be potentially downright dangerous. I don't think I would leave home w/out waders regardless! I like to dry fly myself, but a few nymphs just might save the day. My suggestion, find someone here on the board who would like to get out in the backcountry, share a fire, make a new friend and still enjoy some brookie solitude. As far as where to go- probably have to discuss that with your fishing partner. Brookie country is a closely guarded secret! There are many places to go. Dust off the ol map and plan your blue line adventure! Prepare well, be safe and enjoy!

if molly is your dog, then you really should go somewhere where no one will see you, because i don't believe dogs are allowed on the trails or out in general, other than maybe in your car or around a parking spot.

:( Molly isnt allowed in the park? Nowhere? She stays on a leash and I pick up after her....shes allowed in state parks. Well then, Ill just go way back and stay clear of everybody...I hate to say that I can not follow that rule in the park. Its pretty sad, ya know? Some people come out and trash the wilderness, and me and my lab cant even enjoy it together. Shes cleaner than some people I know (!).
But anyways, Ill bring the waders and a few nymphs. Some warm clothes too. What kind of bugs will be in the air that time? Ive got about 4weeks and I need to tie some flies.

Ok Ive found it ttas67 was right, Molly isnt allowed on the trails or "backcountry":
"Pets must always be leashed. They are allowed along paved roads, in parking lots and in campgrounds accessible to motor vehicles. Pets are not permitted on trails, in public buildings or in the backcountry. Seeing Eye and hearing dogs are allowed throughout the park."
I could pretend shes my seeing eye dog....or hearing dog. ;)

Beware, the rangers are pretty strict on this one. I saw this rule enforced just a few weeks ago when I was in the park...the guys getting the ticket didn't look too happy either.

Please do not take a dog where it is not allowed. the fine is major, you make an offender list, and the dog can and will disrupt normal wildlife activity. the rules are in effect for good reason. again, as a park visitor center employee, i cannot stress strongly enough that you not take the dog into areas where it is not permitted.
