Byron was talking about mayflies on the fishing report today and it made me think back to when I lived in MN. We were going walleye fishing on Lake Mil lacs at night. We stopped by a gas station to fill up and while we were pulling in it looked like a cloud was over the lights even though it was 10 pm. As we got a little closer the cloud was moving and the ground was as well.
We noticed that they were all mayflies that were attracted to the heat of the lights. Pulling up to the pump we rolled over many mayflies that made a distinct "POP". Once we got on the lake we were hoping that they wouldn't be so thick, but we were wrong. Going 30 mph and having mayflies hit you in your face, mouth nose and ears was something that I wish I could forget. Fishing was great that night though. We caught some great walleye and enjoyed our time on the water. I haven't seen any swarm of bugs like that since.
