GATLINBURG — Crews trying to reopen U.S. 441 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after a snowfall today found trees blocking the highway just into North Carolina.
"We must have gotten a microburst or straight line winds," said Bob Miller, a spokesman for the National Park Service.
Some of the trees were large and Miller said he heard crews talking about large root balls that would have to be cleared from the highway.
The road — also known as Newfound Gap Road — connects Gatlinburg, Tenn., and Cherokee, N.C.
The area where about 200 trees fell onto the road is in North Carolina, near the Tennessee state line, east of Newfound Gap.
There was no estimate of when the highway would be opened again and no word about damage to the roadway. Crews were scheduled to work until dark on Monday.
Heavy snow and ice had closed the roadway late Sunday, with about 6 inches of snow recorded inches atop Mt. LeConte, above Gatlinburg

200 trees? wow, I'd like to see what that looks like. I assume and hope nobody was driving around up there when that went on.
