Just kidding! Not what I was trying to catch this evening, but a new species for me on the fly! It hit a purple and black bugger tied on a very sharp Gamagatsu bass stinger hook.

Did that dude fight much. I bet it did on the light rod. I caught one several years ago on a yelllow popping bug, it bit and rolled which caused the line to tie it's mouth shut! Those teeth were needle sharp.
Looks like it had some pretty color. Congratulations!

I love this picture. it looks almost natural to see the gar/fly rod combination. kinda makes it seem like people have been fly fishing for gar as sport forever.

Pretty cool article about gar flyfishing. They are much easier to catch with rope fly (no hook). When I was releasing this fish, it whacked my upper forearm with its tail and drew blood. The teeth are not the only sharp thing on these fish. I saw an episode of the Heartland series recently with a west knox. Doctor who flyfishes for them alot down on watts bar lake.

That is fascinating. We have caught gar on baitcasters when Striper and
catfishing on Kerr lake. There are tons of them there and you commonly see them breaching the water and sunning. I wonder if this 6 wt. launch I just got could handle them? I'm tempted to try and see one evening this weekend!
