Hello to all.
I have been lurking around the site for a while, and decided I should finally join.

I live east of Atlanta, so I am really too far away to make day trips to the
smokies for fishing. Work has been such this year that I have had to work
quite a few Saturdays, especially during the best fishing months of April and
May. This prevented me from having a full weekend to make the trip.
Due to the amount of time and cost required(motel and gas expenses)for a
weekend trip, and that fishing this time of year is pretty bad anyway, I have
been considering a fall trip. I want to make the trip after the tube hatch is
over, but before the fall leaf looker craze starts. What time frame will this fall
into, and is the fishing usually better than late summer?

In reverse order...

1) yes, usually better in fall than late summer - bring (or stop by LRO for) orange. No, it's not a VOL thing. Think orange stimulators. Around mid to late September, Byron's fishing reports will change from emphasizing yellow to emphasizing orange for fall.

2) The leaf looker craze peaks around the third week of October - just in time for the Tennessee/Alabama football game... think orange and red.

3) the tube hatch is never officially over, they just go dormant for a spell - usually around the second or third week of September. The county's/country's school systems have a direct impact on the number of tubers hatching.

C'mon up! The water's fine, although a bit low...
