View Full Version : Best bet for a kid in the park?

My daughter and I will be camping at Elkmont on Friday. I've been fly-fishing for a while now, but when she goes with me, she usually uses salmon eggs. (I know, I know, but she's only 4!)
Now, it's my understanding that it's artificial only in the park. So, my question is, what can I tie on for her that will allow her to catch some fish as well?
(Keep in mind that we're using one of those Spongebob Squarepants rods that casts an amazing 10 feet!)

Well, you could try a nymph and split shot combo - although I tried that on one trip, and within seconds my girls found a way to create multiple knots and tangles without touching the line. A small spinner might be ok, but with the water as low as it is, you might not get much success with it.

Don't laugh but I know a couple of guides in the park that will carry a backup spin rod with a trout magnet in green or pink for the non flyfishers in the group.
Might work for ya!

Thanks, Troutman! I'll give that a shot.

We used the trout magnet in green for my daughter's boyfriend (1st time fishing) and he caught several, including a 12 in brown.

We got in the green trout magnets two days ago that look just like a Green Weenie!

Great! We'll stop by on our way to the park this afternoon to pick some up.
