Buckeye,

The Cranberry River looks to be about to hours from Chareston (its near Richwood, WV). The river is has something like 20 miles of protected waters that they lime to help the water chemistry. Most of it is only accessable by foot or, better, bicycle as there is a well kept gravel road that goes along the entire river. Apart from the good fishing (rainbows, browns and brookies), I think it is the prettiest river I have fished as it flows through a high elevation birch/hemlock forest in a deep gorge, you really feel like you are out there.

In the interest of full disclosure, I may have such a high opinion of the place because it's where I caught my first trout on a fly (10" brown on a BH nymph, thought it was a snag...)

Wherever you go though, I think WV has a lot of great water, so you should enjoy it!

Paint Creek is a little closer to Charleston. It is a stocked stream with some nice sized rainbows. You can reach it from the towns of Mahan, Sharon or Paint Creek.

I don't have any info for you but there is a posting on the Slide Inn site you might want to look at. Maybe you can make contact with that guy or at least get some recommendations.

You can also try this web site they can help with your questions also.
There is a nice stream in monroe county called 2nd creek , never fished it but have heard it is pretty good. From Charleston it would be about 2 hours away off I-64 east near Lewisburg.

I live 30 minutes south of Athens. Been fishing in west virginia for 25 years.
Find this book and it will answer all your questions.
Guide to the catch-and-Release trout streams of west virginia
Published by the Kanawha valley chapter of trout unlimited
maps-tips-hatch charts-lodging information
I ran across it couple years ago at a fly shop on the Elk added it to my library
would have saved me alot of back tracking years ago but I wouldn't
trade that experience for any thing.......fish are extra

'Guide to the catch-and-Release trout streams of west virginia'

if anyone has contact info or info on where to buy the above I would appreciate you posting it. The Kanawha Valley web site seems to be
gone and the contact email on the main TU site comes back as non deliverable. No one answers the telephone number.

Thanks
