I've read you talk about the time you spend in clipping the photographs. You may already be doing this, but if not, have you thought about photographing the items against a "green screen" or any other solid color background and then using photoshop to delete/remove that color?
The "graphics geeks" who work in our photo group do that when taking pictures for our product shots.
Just a thought and one you've probably already been doing.
