hiawassee winter fishing

Hello all and Merry Christmas,
My son is coming in from Texas for Christmas and we are going to stay in a cabin near the Hiawassee. Although I have fished the river for many years I have not fished the trophy section during the winter. Does anyone have any experience with this and/or suggestions. I only have one day and don't have time to come to the Smokies.

Hey Man,

Expect low water, but as always, keep cautious to the threat of rising water.

Right now, little bugs will be the ticket for you guys. Baetis patterns in sizes from 18 to 26 will work well. Dries and softies, dead drift then swing and strip at the end of the drift.

You can get by with nymphs and boogers in the deeper runs, but with the water low, the shallow water will be much more plentiful than the deep runs.

You might also consider the Patty Bridge area as TWRA resumed stocking down there last month and those fish receive much less pressure and will probably be a little easier to work with larger bugs and attractors.

Enjoy the holidays with your son, and maybe the fish will cooperate. :)
