View Full Version : Brookies in winter

I was considering scouting for deer this weekend or next in South Cherokee and was wondering if it would be worth the effort to bring a fly rod. Has anyone ever had any luck fishing for brook trout in the winter?

I've tried for brookies several times with little to no succes in winter months. the cold just shut down the inards. if its sunny and on the warm side you might have a chance. best of luck.

I love to scout out new water during the winter. Definitely take a pack rod and a few flies. You may find a nice sunlit pool that hasn't seen a flyfisherman all year.
I have had very good success with brookies in the winter time while fishing in the Tellico wma. Matter of fact I normally do much better with the specs in the headwaters than I do with rainbows or browns down lower when the temps drop into the thirtys or lower. I do however try to release them while still in the water because the shock of the cold air will kill them in a matter of seconds.
