byron,
this is the police activity this morning
just in case anyone was drivin in the Park this morning and was
wonderin what was goin' on...

TOWNSEND, Tenn. (AP) -- The body of a Georgia man was recovered from
the submerged wreckage of his car found in a river in the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park.
A passing motorist spotted the vehicle Monday morning in the Little
River near Townsend and called authorities. The driver was identified
as 24-year-old Matthew Johnson of Toccoa, Ga.
Johnson apparently lost control on a curve and plummeted about 25
feet down an embankment into the swift waters of the Little River. His
car flipped and landed on its roof.
Johnson was believed to have been alone. His destination was not
immediately known.
Authorities suspect the accident happened in the middle of the
night when it was raining.

Thanks Sam and Bob,

I got an e-mail forwarded to me from Nancy Gray. I knew when the ambulance drove by slowly with no emergency equipment turned on that someone probably died. We usually have a helicopter fly over when there is a chance for life. My prayers are with him and his family too. That road at night especially in the rain is a dangerous place. I also drove up to Richmont Inn this afternoon to check on them. The firefighters were still there. They didn't lose the main building in the fire and Jim seemed OK. His grandkids were supposed to be staying in that building last night but backed out at the last minute. Thank God again.

That is really too bad...that road really is dangerous even for people that drive it all the time. I had friends drive up at night to meet me at Elkmont CG and they told me that they didn't even realize there was a river there...

Out of curiousity, does anyone know if there was anything happening over in the Chilhowee/Happy Valley/Abrams Creek CG area on Sunday? There were more sheriff cars in that one small area driving around than I've ever seen anywhere near the park...

I'm from Toccoa and was actually returning from Toccoa last night on LR rd around 9pm. There were three rangers in the vacinity of this accident clearing a tree from the road. I wonder if he swerved to miss the tree and the rangers never knew he was in the river below...

Given my experiences there when I was looking for property to buy, I can't say that I'm surprised, whatever it was.

They have been speed trapping that area at the request of the governor for some time now. He said he was tired of taxpayers footing the bill to lifestar the motorcyclists on the dragon to UT hospital.

This was more than the usual speedtrap. It was on the side roads back towards the Abrams Creek CG. They seemed like they were looking for someone or something...like Ijsouth said though, I'm not all that surprised...
