Wncfly

Is that a TN elk you use for your avatar (i think that's what it's called)? It's hard to see the mountains in the background on such a little picture. Post a bigger picture if you don't mind.

I took this picture on the North Carolina side of the park late one evening. I was fishing the Oconaluftee river right outside the park headquarters late one evening when I heard something behind me. I turned to see this big fellow and three females. I was kinda of shocked at first, but then just stood there and admired him. I would assume this herd has migrated over the mountain from Cataloochee.

Thank you. Its not everyday your fishing and have that walk up behind you. I was a little nervous at first, but then it was just awe.

You'll like it there. This big guy stopped and watched us fish for a few minutes while we were there last summer.

I would love to spot one of these animals sometime soon. I guess I'm gonna have to get over to the nc side for that though. Anyone know how well the reintroduction of the elk is going? Does it look like something their gonna keep doing, or is it just going to fade away because of unsuccessful reproduction?

nOT SURE

I am not sure, but I think the funding ran out, or a moratorium was put on bringing anymore in. They are doing just fine though, head over to Cataloochee if you want to see one. Personally, I get sick of seeing them and all the vehicles that clog up the road in the valley.

A volunteer's response

Last time I was at Cataloochee I talked with a park volunteer who told me that they had another 2 years to make this a success. She mentioned lack of reproduction and even said that they had been trapping and moving bears out of the area since they have been killing the calves. This was around 9 months ago, so if that was true they have around 15 more months to make it work. Personally I enjoy having the elk there. I think they are one of the most majestic animals I have ever seen, and just love being there in the fall when they are bugling.

I love seeing the elk in Cataloochee. I've wondered why no elk have been reintroduced into Cades Cove?

Kentucky's elk herd is flourishing. I wonder if bears are the only reason the Cataloochee herd is not doing so well?
