Clinch River 9/20

Made it out this morning, and was surprised to see lots of people out there. I guess the apathy for the football team is causing people to choose to go fish instead of the usual gameday events....

Anyway, Fished from 9:30 till 1:00 and landed 25. 2 browns and the rest were an even mix of bows and brookies. The good news is that the brookies are extremely colorful and getting larger. I caught 2 that were 11". But the best news is that I landed 3 bows that were 18+". Hopefully this is a result of the new slot limit. Water temp was 56 degrees, and the fish were fighting with fury today. Absolutely wonderful day to be outside, and I am so thankful that I am blessed with the opportunity to enjoy this sport and the beautiful scenery in East Tennessee. I look forward to the day I can introduce my son to fishing and the outdoors.

I will post some pics later, I haven't had a chance to look at them yet.

Travis, Sounds like a great day on the Clinch with some very good fish. Always envious of folks like yourself with such good angling skills. My skills leveled out a few years back. I've caught a few fish this summer, but not any big fish. Look forward to your pics. Monk

Monk,
It isn't the angling skills as much as it was being in the right place at the right time and having the right fly on. This was one of my best days of fishing ever. Everyday I get out is a blessing and I was thrilled to be on the water, but catching the quality fish is what made it special. I am planning to be out there again this Friday if everything works out according to plan. It is a beautiful time of year and everyone should take advantage of this weather.

Still working on the pics, hope to have them up later. They didn't turn out as good as I had hoped, but there may be a couple decent shots.

Thanks for the report Travis, sounds like it was fun even though there was a crowd. Did you notice if anyone else was having similar success?
Looking forward to the pictures.

FFJ,

I didn't notice how anybody else was doing, I was too caught up in the moment. However, as I was leaving a very nice older gentleman chatted with me. He saw me while I was trying to land one of the big bows and commented on it, and he made the comment that he had a fair morning but nothing of any size.

I have spent all night trying to fix my wife's new Dell laptop, so the pictures will have to wait till tomorrow night.

She had it for all of 8 days before Windows Vista crashed on her. I tried everything to save the few business files she had saved, and was on the phone will Dell tech support for 1.5 hrs. Eventually I had to restore it to the factory image, and now we are back to square one....

I just love how these tools we create to help make us more efficient also cause extensive amounts of down time to repair them that previously was not a factor.

Good day there Chem.

I've been lucky enough to have a couple days like that this summer. What part of the river where you fishin? Takin midge patterns mostly?

ChemEAngler 09-23-2008 03:16 PM

I was on the lower portion of the river, and yes they were taking a zebra midge size 20. Probably 80% of the fish caught were in slow slick water. I would stand back watching for any fish activity and then cast the midge to it. Usually it only took one or two drifts before they crunched it. I was using an indicator and was adjusting the depth to keep it a couple inches off the bottom. Had my best luck in holes around 4' deep with wood debris in the bottom, because of this I did lose quite a few flies.
