staining or oiling cork

I'm building a flyrod (all done but the epoxy) and would like to darken the cork somehow. Has anyone done that (darkened the cork slightly) by oiling or staining it (with something other than dirt and fish slime)

I read somewhere else about using Tru-Oil gunstock finish on cork. Anyone tried that?

I don't think I would use any type of oil. I'd try a water based or alcohol based stain first on a scrap piece of cork. If you do not have any scraps, you could try it on a wine cork. Drink a little wine, stain the cork, drink a little more cork, stain a little more cork, and so forth. Birchwood Casey makes some water and alcohol based stains for gun stocks.

Just had to know , so I just tried walnut water based Birchwood Casey on a brandy cork. Gave sort of a pinkish brown tone. Makes me think that perhaps a brown Rit dye would be the way to go. Maybe even a brown panatone pen and have a alcohol soaked cloth ready to rub over the surface to even out the color. Good luck with this. Silvercreek

I've applied tru-oil to cork grips before. It will lightly darken the cork, giving it a rich (not dirty) looking color. This stuff will give different results, depending on how many coats you apply. it gets shinier, and slicker the more you apply it. If you apply too much, it'll become like a slick lacquer over your cork. I'd say play around with it some on some scrap cork and see what you think. It will do what you've read, but it's easy to go overboard with the stuff, too.
