Water purifier?
Just curious as to what some of you guys use for water purification/filter in the backcountry. I'm looking at both the katadyn hiker (pump system) and the katadyn extreme system (water bottle type). I've researched the pros and cons but any info is appreciated.

I use both, pump and bottle. I have a MSR Mini that I've used for years. Great filter. No problems. I use an Extreme on stream and for backup.

I use Polar Pure since I don't mind the taste of iodine treated water.

I have been using Katadyn Vario for three years and have not had a single issue or complaint.

a Katadyn Hiker Pro is the only filter I have ever owned.

I like the katadyn hiker it filters water fast and the filter does not get to clogged up if you ilter from a bag instead of the stream. By bag I mean that I use an old mylar bag from a wine in the box wine. It works great to fill up with water then you can go back to camp and filter were you are more comfortable. You can hang the bag and have water to use to wash with also.

I primarily use a Sweetwater Guardian (now called a MSR Sweetwater) Filter on my backcountry trips and occasionally a MSR MIOX Purifier, which I always keep in my vest since the weight of the MIOX is only around 4 ounces. I've owned the Sweetwater since 1997, and other than the required filter replacements, it's been trouble free. I bought my MIOX around 2006, and it has been very reliable, although I'm not wild about the taste that the water has after being treated. Country Time Lemonade Mix seems to take care of the taste issue okay.

I've had the Hiker for a few years and like it a lot. Never a problem. I've had several different filters and the Hiker is the best. I also use a bottle with a filter for backcountry day trips. I can't remember who makes it.

I started using Aqua Mira drops it's way lighter than a 1lb filter and tastes about like city water very effective and lightweight.

thanks guys. looks like i'll go with the hiker pro or the bottle filter type. i just happened to remember i'm allergic to it's made it a little tricky finding the right one. i'd rather take my chances with a filter than using iodine tablets.
