NC camping and fishing ??

I plan on going to Cataloochee for 4 days of camping and fly fishing soon, but since it is a first come first serve campground, I am looking for a backup plan. The better sites at Smokemont are taken already, and I have Deep Creek on the list to check if needed. Does anyone have any suggestions for the Pisgah National Forest or any other place within an hour or so of Cataloochee?

tjw, I think that driving from Cosby to Catalooche is just as close as any of the Pisgah NF campgrounds.

Sunburst Recreation Area campground is fairly close to Waynesville, but it's small and seems to fill up fast due to its close proximity to the parkway. I think its around $12 a night.

Also, if you don't want to camp in the NF, Lake Junaluska has tent sites.

I fished, with no success, the Davidson River in the Pisgah National Forest this morning. I saw plenty of "free" road side camping from Davidson River Outfiiters in the town of Pisgah Forest up to the hatchery as well as a couple of campgrounds. I'm not familar with the two towns you mentioned or their distance from Pisgah Forest. I saw some very nice fish up by the hatchery.
Hope that helps a little.

Try Big Creek campground. If you drive the torturous gravel road it should be just under an hour if memory serves me correctly.

Is the Davidson a tailwater or a freestone stream? If I can't get in Cataloochee I might try there. Any information on the area and fishing would be great.

The Davidson is a freestone stream. Be aware that this time of year people are swimming, tubbing, and generally enjoying the same water that we want to fish. I think you would be better off somewhere less popular. Balsa Mountain is a nice camp ground, and the elevation keeps it cool. There is a campground on the parkway across from the Pisgah Inn that is nice. If you go to Cataloochee during the week you can generally find a site, especially if you go in on Sunday or Monday.

Also, Smokemont is still closed due to Obama's goverment money bomb, I believe. I was there two weeks ago and it didn't look like there was any way they would have it finished by this summer. Ps - double check on the "roadside camping" along the Davidson. There are pull-off's etc, but I don't believe you can camp right on the D, primitive style. FS road up past Cradle of Forestry and you have plenty of prim. camping though.road is on the right heading up to the BRParkway.

There are a ton of campsites along the headwaers of te Davidson for sure. You can drive right to them. Alos, I think Balsam Mtn. Campground is still closed as well...that is what the sign said last week as I drove to Straight Fork.
