How often do you change Flyline?
I have not been doing much fishing the last 3 or 4 years. I have some flylines that are perhaps 6 to 8 years old. I clean them with dressing at the beginning and the end of the year and when I fished regularly every 3 or 4 trips. My question is when do you change your flyline and/or your backing?

I the past I would fish them until they were cracked and would not float any longer. Now I use silk.

If you have a big day planned; I would suggest cleaning your whole rig. Clean the fly line and stretch it out. Also; I like to redress my line with treatment. It helps thwart tangles and dry stripping.

Most petroleum based fly line will gas off after removed from the package and it will eventually degrade. Cleaning the line with caustic cleaning agents can cause this process to accelerate. I just clean mine with a wet cloth. Retreat with a moisture agent to help it hold in the chemical substrate.

A bad idea is to store reels+line in hot areas. I have done this before by storing my reels in my outbuilding and it dried them up quickly and it burned in some heavy memory loops.

I have changed line once in 48 years. Take care of it and it will outlast you. I have other lines that are at least 20 years old and still catching fish, although not as large as I would like.
