Oconaluftee

I fished sunday afternoon and found the fish to be very active.Lots of bugs hatching and trout taking dry flies.I caught a bunch of browns and rainbows.I missed or lost as many as I caught, but I really enjoyed the action.

Nice fish. Makes me a little antsy about getting up to the mountains. Was this in the park?

Hey John
Yes I was in the park.It looks like spring has come early this year.Water was just a little high but not bad at all, also very clear. All kinds of bugs hatching.I tied on a parachute adams and fished it all day.Used the same fly all day.I snipped it off and retied after rescuing it from some branches, but every fish caught on same fly.

I've fished many Smokies creeks but never the Oconaluftee. It is on my list though, but I hate dealing with that tourism mess. Can anyone tell me what the traffic noise is like while wading the Oconaluftee upstream of the Bradley Fork confluence but downstream of Beech Flats? I hate hearing Harleys in town so being able to hear them and other cars while fishing on the creek would not make it worth it in my opinion.

You can hear traffic and smell brakes burning while fishing the Luftee.

I love the water near the homestead. There are a few onlookers but it's a neat experience fishing by those historic buildings. Never fished along the road, but I am planning on it. It looks like good water.

hauntedbywaters--Basically, when fishing any part of Luftee, and for that matter Beech Flats Prong as well, you cannot escape the roar of motorcycles. There are one or two places, such as the Visitor Center's Pioneer Village and up at Tow String Road, where the highway is 100-300 yards away. Mostly though, it is much closer. All the way up to where Luftee begins with the union of Beech Flats and Kephart prongs you are quite close to the road. Beech Flats does find the road getting higher up on the ridge, but even there the noise can be bothersome. Mind you, the fishing is sometimes first rate.

I am new to fishing the streams inside the park. The luftee is the only stream I`ve been on so far.Fished it three times. The reason i started there is time.usually when i`m in that area I only have four or five hours to fish and don`t want spend it driving around when I don`t really know what I`m looking for.I am now the proud owner of one of JoeFreds maps, and I see that with a little more effort I can get away from all the traffic. So I`ll be branching out a little.(pardon the pun)Great map,a real time saver for someone that not familiar with the area.(like me)As for the highway noise,Yep it`s annoying.
Funny thing is,last sunday afternoon the fishing was so good I don`t remember hearing any of it.

thank you Mr Casada for you explanation about the section of the luftee from blue ridge parkway to confluence with Raven Forkthat you gave in a previous post.
