Backpacking and Fly Fishing The Smokies (Pic Heavy)
Oldman and I just returned from a 2 night backpacking trip in the GSMNP. After some heavy recent rains the streams were very full and flowing very fast. However, we managed to catch pretty good numbers of fish and had a very good time. We both fished a dry/dropper, catching plenty of fish on both the dry and the nymph.
Wading was tough, to say the least. We spent a lot of time belly crawling and bushwacking through the laurel and rhodo thickets as high fast water made moving upstream impossible in many areas. We saw plenty of bear scat, but the only wild animals we encountered were turkeys. Combat fishing at it's finest.

The water was still high and fast, but it was much lower than yesterday. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...s714/046-1.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...s714/047-1.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...s714/048-1.jpg |
Nice report. The fishing regulations picture has to be my favorite.

Oldman needs a "wide load" sign...he is taking up a lot of trail with that pack. :p
|
Really nice report and photos. Looks like your report included some high country as well as some larger water. Looks like you two made the most out of the fishing conditions. ;)
As far as the comments on Oldmans back pack, we meet Oldman a couple weeks ago on the trail, and i think his pack was the size of both my brothers and mine put together. I wish i had that kind of strength, i was worn out just looking at it. |
My pack wieghed around 40lbs.coming out. We only went 2 miles. My pack was more "fluffy" than most folks.

Great Report, and Thanks for posting
You better be careful when handling those Brookies. Looks like one was about to bite off your finger:eek:
That was definately some real high water. I think I remember you saying in another post about getting high water skunked a month back or so. I hope your not bad luck that way. If so, remind me to bring my kayak also if I ever fish with you:biggrin: I'm headed to the backcountry this weekend, and you trout cooking pics have my curious of how you spiced them. You method looks so incredibly tempting as simplicity. I don't like trout, but would like to cook a few up for my buddy. |
No spice mon. Cooked until the juices nearly stop flowing , eyes white and skin brown. Dont rush it. Just like roasting marshmallows only longer. The only spice I would add would be some bourbon and coke.

Yep, just a little smoke flavoring. The brook tasted much better than the bow. Just peel the skin off and the meat falls right off the bone.
High water made my trip to Deep Creek last month pretty unproductive, but I was not skunked, I just did not catch very many on that trip. |
