At Troutfest 2012: "Friends of the Dale Hollow National Forest Fish Hatchery"

Friends of the Dale Hollow National Forest Fish Hatchery is listed as a 2012 Troutfest vendor (exhibitor). We should all drop by and offer our encouragement.

Things may be okay for the time being, thanks in part to Senator Lamar Alexander, Representative Phil Roe and concerned citiizens who contacted them, but nine national fish hatcheries, six of which are in the Southeast, could still lose most, if not all, of their funding in the future. In Tennessee, they include the Erwin National Fish Hatchery in Erwin, Tenn., which supplies trout eggs to other hatcheries, and the Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery in Celina, Tenn., which last year provided 1.3 million trout throughout Tennessee.

The following is an excerpt from a knoxnews.com June 1, 2011 post by Morgan Simmons :
...
Last year, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency stocked about 2.2 million trout across the state. About 64 percent of that total came from the Dale Hollow hatchery, according to TWRA.

Approximately half of the 1.3 million trout raised at the Dale Hollow hatchery last year were stocked in 11 waterways controlled by the TVA, according to hatchery officials.

One of the state's most popular trout fisheries is the Clinch River below TVA's Norris Dam. Each year, the Buffalo Springs Fish Hatchery, a state-operated hatchery near Rutledge, Tenn., raises about 36,000 catchable-size rainbow trout for the Clinch, while Dale Hollow contributes about 160,000 fingerling rainbows, as well as 40,000 brown trout.

The trout stocked in the Citico Creek, Tellico River and Green Cove Pond in the Cherokee National Forest originate from the Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery.

And while Dale Hollow is the hub of production for the state's rainbow, brown and lake trout, the Erwin National Fish Hatchery is responsible for supplying the egg on which the other hatcheries rely.
