Power Pick Magnet - hook spills
A while back I think I wrote how I place my fly tying vise on a cookie sheet to help manage spills. I find this helps a lot. I also have a Power Pick Magnet I got at Lowe's. It is about a 12 inch magnet with an extendable handle. The other day I bumbled and fumbled until I emptied a box of size 14 dry fly hooks on the floor. So much for doing it over the cookie sheet! The magnet made it a breeze to get them all. If you are spill prone like me this is a valuable piece of equipment to have.

i have used similar magnets in the past due to I tie over carpet. several samll hooks lost on carpet can become a nightmare. great tip though. also sears sells a magnetic bowl that is good if you are tying several flies of the same size. you just dump the hooks in the bowl and pull one out as you need one. if you knock over the bowl then the hooks are safely in place with no spills.

My wife gave me a magnetic pin cushion when I started tying.

I use a big magnet for the hooks that hit the floor, but for my bench top, I use a couple of business card magnets you can get at Staples. The adhesive side sticks to the top very well. It keeps the hooks in place, but easy to pick up.
