Son of Little River - Backyard Watershed Project

This miniaturized Little River might be like the Roy Neary character played by Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Columbia Pictures, 1977). In the flick the "Indiana electrical lineman experiences a close encounter with a UFO" after which he "becomes increasingly obsessed with subliminal, mental images of a mountain-like shape and begins to make models of it." At first Devil's Tower was replicated with his mashed potatoes at dinner and then (following his wife leaving with the kids) with shovels of soil hurled though a window into the house, piled high on the family's dining table where it was hosed down and sculpted.

Littler Little River's streambeds in order from the bottom to the top of photo: West Prong, Middle Prong (and tributaries: Thunderhead Prong, Sams Creek and Lynn Camp Prong) and East Prong (featuring The Sinks and Metcalf Bottoms).
I confess to using considerable proportioning license. Middle Prong is particularly under represented, but our lot is only so big and... and the neighbor didn't much care for the idea of my ditching his. ;)

Fred,
Now that is taking it to a whole new level. Excellent fun!

Posts updates when you get them.

Shawn, Mrs. Maps asked that you not encourage me.

Gotta take a break and persue a different sort of UFO... undisclosed fishing opportunities.

Joe Fred,

If you get bored, please feel free to come plow my garden!

That is beautiful. Got a good chuckle out of that. See alot of that in the flatlands here where a a natural patterned stream is the exception and channelized ditches are the rule.

Project Status Report

Project scope was changed. Middle and West Prongs are closed for reforestation (actually sunflowers, cucumbers, squash and various other invasive species Mrs. Maps ordered online).

Things are coming along. I pretty much solved the problem of costly water loss due to excessive evaporation. Now I'm hoping my neighbor's dog doesn't unearth the line I ran to his master's swimming pool while away on vacation.

That's just to cool. Showed it to my wife. She saw the gears grinding in my head and immediately said NO!

Nice! Mind if I ask how much that ended up costing you in material?

JoeFred 07-09-2013 12:04 PM

Hoosier, materials were just under $300, but I found the pump new at a yard sale for $40. It's a Beckett 7206810 W3500 Waterfall Pump, 3500 GPH. Retails for about $150.

No one has asked about fishing it?

Have you caught any large browns up the East Prong yet? Perhaps you should give DK a call. He might come from CO to try and find them for you...
