Restoration

I received a bamboo rod last night that had been tucked away in my late grandfather's closet. The label was worn almost completely off, but from the reel seat I was able to determine this 8'6" 3 piece rod is a Montague Flash from around the 40s. I know this rod was an economy model and not sought after but I would like to restore this rod to make it fishable. The cork is in decent shape. The reel seat is ok. The varnish seems ok. It's missing two guides and one of the two tips is bent.i've also heard that this rod needs a few more guides to make it a better fishing rod. I've replaced a guide on a casting rod before but I haven't had a lot of practice. What would I be looking at trying to do this myself vs sending this to someone else to restore? Thanks.

I just wanted to say thanks for the link. I found a little help over there and am now waiting on components. I will be refurbishing this rod instead of restoring. Replacing all the guides and adding a few extra to help make this a better fishing rod. Looking forward to trying this rod out and I hope to bring it with me in October to the GSMNP to land my first trout.

Great glad to hear it. You enjoy the refubish and fishing the rod when completed.

Well wouldn't you know, I recieved my guides today and found I have two cracks in the female ferrule on the mid section. Time to find someone to help with that repair. Any suggestions?

Try Ricks rods in Denver or Dave La Clerk. That may be spelled wrong

Rod went out today for some ferrule work. Hopefully it won't be gone long so I can wrap up all the new guides and test it out. Will post pictures.

Narcodog - you made a great reccomendation with Rick's Rods. He got my ferrules taken care of, straightened the tip section with the set and smoothed out the grip all in less than a week. Very reasonably priced and great work and communication. Heck of a nice guy. Would highly reccomend that shop and will do business with them again for building supplies. New guides and some extra varnish in store this week.

Glad it worked out for you. Rick has a stellar reputation.
