Great looking fly there! Is it just a yellow hammer w/ black dubbing? If so I'll have to tie some up!

Hugh Hartsell has been saying the same things for years, I guess I need to tie up or buy some:smile:

Is that guinea hen for the hackle?

silvercreek 06-27-2014 04:31 PM

Starling for hackle.

starling hackle. wrap almost the whole shank in lead wire, i have tried black possum and squirrel and hairs ear. it doesn't look special but it works. i tie them as small as i can. then again it could be i have more confidence in them but like i said i fished 2 nymphs tandem and that was the one they took

Nice tie dalerio. It's a good one for sure  If you ever get a chance to watch Hugh tie some up it can be informative. I think he still comes over to tie a LRO a couple times a year. He does a couple small things that change the way the fly looks and fishes. The way he weights the fly, and the way he wraps the hackle are a little different than a standard wet fly pattern. Adding some ribbing to your fly would make it a little more durable, but it looks fine like it is. Wet flies and how to fish them are becoming a lost art.

I'm going to tie it with a red wire rib. I've noticed that my black midges seem to work with a red wire rib. What size hook do you tie them on?

dalerio 07-03-2014 10:26 PM

14,16 even smaller, i have some with red wire too, the hackle does something that makes it so good i think, go as small as you can go. i take a toothbrush to some also. a sz 12 or 14 beadhead prince or rubberlegged copperjohn and blackbird off the back are deadly. its like they see the big fly and take the small one
