Saltwater suggestions

I'm heading to Phuket, Thailand later this summer and need to purchase a saltwater setup for both rod and reel. I currently use a Winston LT 3wt with a Lamson Velocity for the Smokies and a Sage 6wt with an older Orvis reel for larger fish out west. I love my Winston, so I'm looking at the Born B2B in the 9 - 12 wt range. Can folks give me some suggestions as to if this is a good choice for both my upcoming trip AND for use in the Atlantic and Gulf Coast areas, as I live in Huntsville.

Thanks!

Greg

Re: Saltwater suggestions

Saltwater presents the same problems that freshwater does when trying to choose the right tackle - there is no prefect size. The first thing that you need to consider is what will you be fishing for and what size. For all around inshore saltwater I would suggest a 9 wt. It can handle a little bit of wind, a variety of sizes of flies and is sufficient for any redfish, bonefish, most snook, baby tarpon and other similar sized fish. If you want to tackle larger species like mature tarpon, sharks, and offshore species I would suggest jumping to an 11 or 12 wt. As for brands, I am partial to Scott but the best thing to do is cast as many different rods as possible and find the one that fits you best. Also cast these rods at a variety of distances with leaders and flies, as often times your shots in saltwater are less than 40 feet and rods always behave differently under actual fishing conditions.

Thanks Drew! I'm leaning now towards a 9wt Winston iix as my choice. I'm still a bit perplexed by the numerous reels available. Any suggestions there?

Greg
