Hiwassee River 7/9

Where: Hiwassee River
Date: 7/9/06
Time: 9:45 AM - 7 PM
Weather: Mid 80's, some breeze, partly cloudy, rain in the evening.
Water Temp: 60 degrees (taken just above Big Bend)
Water Flow - One turbine from 10-11AM, Two from 11-7 PM.

Hatches: No major hatches noticed. Did have the occasional Isonychia pop off, several male iso's. When water first turned on in the AM there was a hatch of a small mayfly, but I couldn't catch one to identify.

Observations: Marmot and I fished from the Powerhouse down to Reliance. We spent majority of our time between Powerhouse and Big Bend. Trophy section has been a bit off as far as trout fishing goes. We boated somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30 trout. All rainbows except for 2 browns. All fish ranged between 9-12". We took lunch just below the shoals at Fox's Cabin at about 2:00. We parked ourselves underneath a shade tree along a bank of yellow wild flowers. No sooner had I dropped anchor and turned my attetion upriver to watch the river I saw this swirl in the water about 15 feet off the side of the boat. A little feeder fish was coming straight for us running for his life hopping in and out of the water. Directly behind him creating a wake was a nice brown in hot pursuit. They disappeared under the hull of the boat and all was calm. I can only imagine the little guy didn't make it. It was thrilling to see. Mother Nature at her best. It is a strong reminder that in this world of ours we are either the hunted or the hunter, and at times both at once.

Flies Used... PMX's, Madam X's, Terrantulas, Parachute Adams, Zebra Midges, Pheasant Tail Nymphs, Hairs Ears and Wooly Boogers. All caught fish.

No other way to spend a Sunday then floating down river on the Hiwasssee.
