Re: winter smallmouth
Tickle their nose with a black wooly bugger to wake them up is the best idea I can think of.

Good luck!

I like them smallies too!

Same principal applies as in trout fishing. Cold water=slow metabolism and lethargic bass. Have to get deep, around structure, and play with different stripping rates to see what works. Also, try different size nymphs, buggers and clousers until you start getting hits.
Good luck!!!

Just thought of this.

You might check out- Bob Clouser’s book Fly Fishing for Smallmouth

A friend of mine is bringing it over in a couple of days. Looking forward to it...

Re: winter smallmouth
Deep and slow. The last few days might have seen them moving around a bit. But mostly this time of year the hunker down, moving or feeding very little. Smallies are a little more warm natured than trout. Good luck! If you carry a thermometer you might look to see if a warmer flow is coming in on a feeder stream (maybe it flows through field that gets the afternoon sun), they will gravitate toward the warmer flow. If you have some success, let us hear about it.
