Priest Hybrid
May is the month for this stuff but as any Hybrid/Striper fisherman will tell you its feast or famine. Been feasting lately and it should continue for a little while. Wish I could stay on the movements of these fish all week! It will soon be too hot to target them and I'll move on the other places and fishy's

Here are just a few of the fish we caught. Note the graph in the photo of Bill and his hog.

Great pics. Looks like a very successful trip.

Strong work!! Looks like somebody was supposed to be working.

I understand.

Thanks for the kind words. Here's one I forgot to post that shows what these fish do when they see the boat!

Hey mike,

Great pics! My house is about 3 minutes from Priest lake. I fish it alot during the summer. One of my favorite lakes to fish...

great picts
Mike, You always have such great picts. What is the largest hybrid striper you have ever landed on the fly?
My uncle has caught several on Norris up to 65lb but they were trolling with downriggers. Like to see a pict. if you have it available.

Thanks Troutman you do pretty good with the camera yourself. Do fish that broke me off count, hehhe. My best on the fly was a Striper around 18 to 20 pounds.
I've spent several years chasing these fish with gear and have caught plenty of fish from 10 to 40 pounds. Stripers on the fly is a new endeavor I've been toying with on and off for three years now, more this year then any. The knowledge I've gathered from my years as a gear guy have proved invaluable in the pursuit. These fish are almost as willing to take a fly as anything.

65 pounds is a huge Striper! The state record is only 65 pounds 6 oz!!! Ralph Dallas caught it in the same river system I caught this one.

big stripers
Maybe it was 65"instead of 65pds. Who knows, all fishermen are liars anyways right! He had it mounted on his wall above the fireplace. It was big I remember. He died several years ago and I don't know what happened to the mount, it had a weight and length plate. He made a yearly guided trip with some guy on Norris to troll for them.
How have these fish affected the largemouth populations in Mid TN lakes? Everyone blames the stripers for the poor L-bass fishing on Norris but the smallie fishing is flourishing. Ive caught some small ones on Cherokee lake on live bluegills hooked in the dorsal fin and left to swim around. Im gonna have to come over there sometime and take a trip with you.

It was 65lbs
I believe the record was set at Norris back in the 80's. Someone correct me if i'm wrong! There is a guide that works out of Hickory Star Marina on Norris. It's about a 7 to 10 minute boat ride from there. We paid 100 a piece to spend 8 hours with him. I believe his name was Bill unsure of the last name. It was 100 bucks very well spent landing several over 30lbs. We caught several 4+ lb smallies as well trolling around an island! It's a pretty simple set up consisting of about four planer boards and two balloons, using LY and Shiners around 4 ft of the planer or balloon. I was the only one that caught one on a wieghted jig throwing it off the front of the boat.

I believe there's two records that came out of norris the other being Musky. I'd would love to spend a day out there on fly though! The best fighters are the smallies and the stripers in the 15 to 20lb range. The put up one heck of a fight.

Cheers! On a successfull day on the water!

"Maybe it was 65"instead of 65pds. Who knows, all fishermen are liars anyways right!"

Hey, I resemble that remark! Hehe

Tournament fishing has hurt the LM population on most reservoirs alot worse then Stripers ever could. There’s all kind of data out there to support that remark but still Stripers get blamed… Priest is an excellent LM lake that keeps coming back stronger year after year, yet it’s also one of the best Hybrid lakes in the country. The folks at TWRA continue to do great work here in Mid TN with all of our fisheries. Its better now then it was years ago and you can't say that about much of anything these days...
