Always a Beginner
I began fly fishing in 1991. It was a fluke. Byron took me down to the stream that runs behind our house; it was stocked with monster fish that he fed. I caught one. I was instantly hooked. The adrenaline that happens when there is a bend in your rod is something truly magical.
Since then, I have been on a quest for knowledge about this sport, for increased skills, tricks, methods, history, new horizons. I have never been disappointed with what I have found.
In 1995, Byron and I became involved in the business of fly fishing, but I can say with all honesty that I have not been spoiled on the sport I love by making it our work. To the contrary, I find I love it more. That is largely because of the incredible people we have come to know and regard as friends, the amazing places we have had the privilege to fish, the dream of the next great adventure with Byron...to whom I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude for having given me my start in fly fishing.
Another love of this sport is the thrill of introducing new fishers to it. I love teaching this sport more than anything else I do. Because I remember how excited I was...and I want to always remember that moment...that first fish...and I want to pass that spark on...for that reason, I hope to always be a beginner.
