Re: Black Bear Encounters

Gek,
I tend to follow your philosophy when it comes to bears. The spray may work if attacked by homo sapiens.

Re: Black Bear Encounters

Trtbm,
I understand that unless you hit the bear in the eyes it has no effect. They would have to be within about 20 feet to be used and that is a long shot from a spray can.

Re: Cookout???

Good idea. I did'nt know where I should have posted. As the weather improves I will post again in SMP section to see if there is a better response.
Thanks.

Re: Black Bear Encounters

I'm about 10-12 years younger than you. Don't remember the deer and other animals but the bear I remember was always a spot we stopped when going into the park when I was a child. Now days it's hard...

Re: Crappie

Was this in one of the E. TN lakes? What kind of structure were you fishing? A dozen pan size Crappie makes a mess of fried fish!

Re: Black Bear Encounters

Cades Cove, Clingman's Dome and Greenbriar are the places where I have seen the most bears. Most of the backcountry campsites have bears when thier natural food is scarce.
Reality check! Who...

Re: the wait is killing me

Great read! Very few can write with so much feeling. I would suggest a fishing diary if you have not already started one. May be the makings of a book.
Keep'em coming!

Re: Black Bear Encounters

Fishabug,
Thanks for contributing. I believe that the more we learn about others experiences regarding bears may better prepare us to handle future encounters. We have all seen or heard what a large...

Re: Over-Lining

Usually a slow to medium action rod does not require a heavier line. I have found that short casts with a fast action rod loads better with a heavier line. It seems to help most with the shorter...

Re: Cookout???

David,

Thanks for replying. I will let you know what is decided. Sundays are alright with me to. Some may not want to miss church, but we may be able to work something out.

By the time I finish...

Big Irish,
I think you have a gift for writing. I enjoyed reading your post. It sounds like me when I started but not expressed so well.

Be sure to post a message recording the events of your...

Re: Cookout???

Someone mentioned that this would be a good chance to learn from experience fisher persons. If we get enough interest we could try to pair up a beginner with an experienced fisher person. They would...

Re: Slickrock Creek

If you are coming in from the TN side you can turn onto an access road just before you get to the ****. Follow it down to the put in area on the lake. It is then about a 30 min. paddle down the left...

Re: Fishing This Weekend- suggestions

Greenbriar is a good place to fish. Just go east from Gatlinburg on the main street of Gatlinburg. Everything from stocked right outside the park, then Bows, then if you go high enough, Specs.

Re: Slickrock Creek

We backpacked into Slickrock from the top of the mountain (TN side). Bear hunters and bear dogs were everywhere. A couple of dogs stayed with us for three days that we were there. We were well above...

Cookout???

How many folks would be interested in getting together in Townsend or in the park for a cookout on a Friday evening and then hitting the streams on Saturday?
It would be a good oppurtunity to meet...

Re: Black Bear Encounters

You are probably right about them seeing us and us not seeing them. Did I say that right? It has been about 40 yrs since I've seen a 55 gal drum for a trash can in the park. I LOL imagining the bear...

Re: Fly Line for my needs

It probably depends on the application. If you are going to be making really long casts a W/F line would work. I use a #5 on tailwaters on a #5 rod. I use my #4 7ft rod in the park and on warm...

Re: Beginner Fly Tying

About the dog hair. Remember deer hair is hollow that is why it works on certain patterns. Dog hair is not. Plus what if you tie a fly that someone wants to market? You will have to raise a lot of...

Re: Fly Line for my needs

I use a 7ft #4 Penn rod most of the time. It is a fast action rod. I had the same problem especially when trying to cast a short line with a long leader which is a must in a lot of situations in the...

That was close. Too close for comfort in my book! I have been going to the park since I was a child. First with my parents then as a teenager looking for fun, then as an adult to hike, camp and fish....

Black Bear Encounters

Has anyone had any close calls with the bears in the park? I was fishing in Greebrier one November and had pulled off the road well above the paved road. As I exited my truck I started down to the...
