My favorite smokies rod is an 8' 3" 3wt. The 3wt part makes me think 10" is huge, and the 8' 3" part helps more than it hurts.

I use either an 8' 4wt. or a 8' 3" 3wt. rod in the park. By big, do you mean long, or heavy/stiff/too much rod for an 8" fish? For me, the pro's of an 8' rod (extra reach, nymphing, looks cool)...
