They do look like something from that time period, they are amazing looking creatures. The NPS says they can get to over 2' in the park! Imagine coming across one of those while wet wading.....

You'd probably have a harder time getting the barb to penetrate with a barbed hook than with a barbless hook. It may just be me, but I find that I have a harder time keeping smaller fish on the hook...
