Spent about 3 hrs above Elkmont...4 fish, a good 10 in brown (on a dry). The hatch never materialized. Lots of water.

Paint Creek

Paint Creek is a trip I make about every three years. It has several holes stocked with some really big trout. The fish must be absolutely pounded and are skittish. I last went about 3 weeks ago on a...

I saw my first bear in the park about 1/4 mile below the gravel road on tremont. He wasn't very interested in me, but he definitely wasn't startled...just kind of watched me for a few seconds and...

Hidden fish

I never realized how many fish I was missing or how many fish are in those streams until I witnessed a large hatch when the fish were feeding.

What about the fish.

That is a log. I couldn't imagine pulling that fish out of one of those streams. Without giving the exact location, is this right at the mouth or a mile upstream or so?

? White Bass on a fly

This time of year the white bass in Fort Loudon absolutely feast on shad minnows in the shallows. Has anyone tried these guys on a fly rod?

Fontana

I was in that area a bout two weeks ago. The Little Tennessee below the dam seemed to be pretty big water with STEEP banks...I'm not sure if the water level changes much at all with generation...

Not looking to hot...

in those pictures. I would want no part of an animal like this in the wild. I'm glad they think the same about us. Whenever I hear people talk about what they are going to do if a bear attacks them,...

Those concrete structures...

were surely built to last...including the cast iron hardware on a few of them. They look like something off the Maginot Line. I did pick up A Pocket History of Appalachia on the way up. It is truly...

Back from Hazel

The severity of the drought was really brought out on seeing the lake when arriving at the marina. The ferry pilot said the water was down 32 ft from normal. The round trip cost for the ferry was 50...

"Crowded"

"Crowded" would be a relative term here, right. I mean its hard to imagine I'd spend alot of time fishing behind or next to anyone midweek on Hazel. Its not any more crowded than Tremont would be...

65 CFS flow...

I don't think I've ever seen the Little River at this low of a flow. How low can it go before there is serious damage to the fish population?

I have a copy of Steve Cotham's The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and I thought for sure I was going to be posting this with a source and date, but after flipping through the book I cannot find...

History:Why no big fish?

I have seen pictures of people with stringers full of 20 inch brook trout caught in the Smoky Mountains around 1928. My understanding now is that there are no big fish because of the wide weather...

I was driving out of the park and decided I'd stop at the Y before leaving the park...it was dusk and the Little River lokked very similar to this and the fish were going nuts. I caught 7 in about...

Fishing Abrams Creek on friday...

really bought home how critical the upright position is to my technique. I fell at least 6 times (fish to fall ratio not good 6/7)...not slipped, fell. From here on, I'll be the guy out there with...

Nonpoisonous...

I agree with the original poster...these are nonpisonous snakes...the diamond head on the copper heads and cottom mouth snakes I've seen has been pretty definate.

Down from Clingmans dome

I made that trip last year and almost got washed away in a thunderstorm....Now, everytime I think about trying it again, I reconsider. I didn't see anyone else the whole day.

I know its a long shot, but I lost my fly box about 0.5 mile above the hiking bridge at tremount last week while freeing a tiny rainbow. Its unbelievable how quick it was gone and how quickly I...

For the most part....

the creeks just are't that big. A spinning reel with a single hook rooster tail would be plenty for Abrams Creek and the roadside portion of the Little River but is teally too much for most of the...
