Thank you Buzz

That is the report I read. I had just never encountered the term "long jaw." Lennon does a good job explaining what a long jaw is, but all in all this report is pretty good evidence that the trout we...

Recently while looking over some old fisheries research in the park (1950s), I came upon the term "long jaw" rainbow trout. Is anyone here familiar with the term? I cannot find anything on it.

Seems appropriate to me

Punk,
Perfect post in the perfect place. Some blame goes to the politicians, but the real culprits are the bottom feeding bureaucrats. Think of it as the NPS's way of saying thank you for the help...

Bought a few Yallarhammars there over the years

Big Sur,
It was a great stop. I wish I had all of the flies I bought there.

One time around 1975 I had to buy enough brake fluid (and two six packs of beer) to get my old '66 Dart back to...

Another fluke?

BigSur,
Sounds like big fun to me. Some of the wholes on Little River are deep enough to bottom rig fish (using live chubs) of course. Let us know how it works.

In terms of quality, I rate Gasque's book as better. Gasque was an interesting fellow as well was Manley. Hopefully the new fly fishing museum in Cherokee will have a lot of information on their...

There's a good looking copy of Joe Manley's Fishing The Great Smoky MOuntains on Ebay. Joe self published this little hardback in 1938. They are tough, tough to find. Eddie George gave me my copy,...

Recent glass testing

For the last couple weeks I've been fooling around with a couple of new glass fly rods. One, an Orvis 5-wt we are giving away Thursday, is really nice. It's casting action is sweet, but I really like...

back when

I knew BigSur back in the 1960s, or was it 1950s? Anywho, back in those days I vividly recall him coming to school with stoogies. Perhaps Byron should consider an "otter cook off" for the fly tier...

Barely Plausible

While I don't do it in the Smokies, many other places I fish with a sheathed knife on my belt. You don't need a Crocodile Dundee size instrument. A six to eight inch fixed blade will suffice. Chances...

Horny head

Horny head it be, and not bad eating. The old timers used to go after them in the spring as much as they did trout. They fished for them when these fish "fluttered." Back in the 70s a ranger at Big...
