DK - You are looking at one of the best patterns to use on big pike...
And yes... this has happened to me before. It is really quite an experience!!!
Variations on this fly regarding size and color = my #1 surface/sub-suface pattern for pike...
Also, they love anything with rabbit.
And for strictly below the surface, with sinking lines, clouser minnows big and flashy will do you well...
