I used to live in the Tampa bay area. I really did not do much Saltwater fly fishing, but I did a lot pier and surf fishing with standard gear. The main thing that you want to be careful of down there (if you are wading) is to shuffle your feet as you walk. This is to prevent you from stepping on any rays that might be lying on the bottom and they have been known to bury themselves in that sand. I have swam with rays before and even petted them while snorkeling. their stingers are purely a defensive mechanism.
"Yea, though I walk through the shadow of the mountain. I will fear no trout: for thou art with me; thy fly rod and thy wading staff they comfort me."
