If you'll just move on up the mountain on Highway 441, past the Chimney Tops trailhead (leaving behind Road Prong) and even a little above the Alum Cave trailhead (to Mt. Lecont), the river should get much more manageable and you'll be up into totally brookie country. There are just several rivers that dump into WPLP and it can get high at times, especially when there has been rain in the higher elevations.
When I was up there on Friday, the water temp was 58 degrees as opposed to 70 degrees just above Townsend - much more trout-friendly. Also, by Wednesday, the water may have had a chance to go down a bit. Give it a shot and let us know how it went.
