Shaggy--In addition to books already mentioned, you might want to consider Michael Frome's Strangers in High Places, Jim Gasque's Hunting & Fishing in the Great Smokies (recently reprinted), Ken Wise"s Hiking Trails of the GSMNP if you can find it--it"s out of print and scarce but is far and away the best book on Park trails). Hattie Caldwell Davis's books on Cataloochee, Lanche Holland's Fontana, and that is just a start. If you are a serious reader there's a 20 or 30 page annotated bibliography in my Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park: An Insider's Guide to a Pursuit of Passion, which will give you a much fuller guide to the literature on the region.
