Gary, I use the 2" pipes in the side of the boat. You are correct in that it makes some creaky noises when you insert them. However; they stay nice and safe during a boat load of fishing buddies fishing shallow water.

I would consider moving your current setup on to the side of your boat. You can mount it with a simple pop-rivet gun. This would give them less of a footprint to get broken. I have had about 4-5 rods broken in my boat similar to your current setup.

Also; you could come up with some kind of vertical pin mounting system by utilizing those two-oar locks on each side. Maybe drop a vertical rod in each and clamp them to some commercial rod holders...? Then; you could lift the whole setup out by releasing the pins - per your clamping arrangement...

Just some ideas...
