    Default Grandad's musing

Some of you who are blessed with grandchildren. Please share how soon one can introduce the little ones to our favorite past time (FF). Additional hints of how you teach them to cast; sites in the GSMNP for introducing them to easy SAFE wading; other suggestions for a granddad who can't wait.
    Thanks for sharing your experience.

While not a granddad I had my son later in life than anticipated.....I built him his first flyrod from an old fiberglass rod from my youth and had him practicing in the yard when he was 5....same year that he started fishing with me in the Park...early on I had to limit the size stream where I could take him...knee deep on me put him in deep water....I got him started in some of the smaller water where he could walk the banks and cross without swimming....the creek in the picnic area of Cades Cove has fish in it and is a good fit as are Jakes Creek in Elkmont and the upper end of Roaring Fork ...also Cosby Creek around the campground in Cosby is also user friendly to the little guys...what a great gift you will be giving to both of you.

My son started fly fishing with me when he was 12. That''s more because of when I started fly fishing than anything else. He has been fishing (spinning rods) with me since he was about 3.

    pedipop,

Try the childrens streams in Gburg. Got cardfly Jr. on a fish several times there on our last trip and he still rubs it in that he caught more fish than me. Also, if you looking for little bitty waders cabelas has some for little people.

    Good luck.
