Takes time, and time put in on a river is an oppurtunity to learn the river. What makes a run, where will fish hold, do sulphurs come off in shallow or deep water, or next to shoals? Should I fish a nymph, emerger (what is an emerger), or dry? If I false cast 8 times over a fish will that put him down, or should I learn to false cast once or none, and will that cast produce drift? You think my UT orange cap is too bright, and the fish might see it, or think it contrast with my white t-shirt, ie, cone of vision for a trout? Lots of reasons for skunkin's!
River time makes you a better angler. And BTW, if you learn to fish on the Clinch you can hammer just about any stream, anywhere.
We have all been skunked, past, present, and future.
I am a great admirer of spectator sports, especially on television; it keeps the riffraff off the trout streams.
