Default Byronís bug slapping fish report,

I read the daily fishing report as I always do. Neat thing about todayís report is last night while fishing I was missing a lot of hits. I noticed a lot of the fish were slapping at the fly and even hooked one just above the tail, and caught several after the fly got pulled under. Lots of action and it was fun. I wondered if it was something I was doing that caused me to miss so many hits. It is nice to find out it was just not me the fish were in a bug slapping mood.

Its fun to watch several fish in a pool feed like that, but can be frustrating if you are trying to land them. Usually they only get in that mood when a fairly decent hatch is comming off.

So its not just me that lives this nightmare from time to time.

I've come to hate the Captain D's commerical with the tail slapping people becuse it reminds me of a frustrating trout slap to my fly.

Usually when you get a last second refusal like that the fish is telling you something doesn't look just right. Most of the times I think it's the drift. The lower and clearer the water is the more important a drag free drift becomes. There are a couple of things you can do when this happens to you to get a better drift. The simplest things you can do are go to a smaller fly, lengthen your tippet, or reduce the diameter of your tippet. All of these will help you get a more natural drift. Changing your position in the stream or learning a couple other methods of reducing drag like in air mends and a reach cast will also help.
