Default wed 8-20 sams creek and thunderhead

we decided to take a trip to the smokies this week instead of the caney....after stopping in at little river outfitters and getting some flys and some direction from daniel we were ready to head up past the institute and go brookie fishing...popped in and met byron and chatted briefly... a very nice guy glad to have met him...we walked the trail to a dry stream bed and follwed it to thunderhead prong...fished up to the mouth of sams...picked up a few small bows...didnt see a trail that went up sams so we boulder climbed up sams.... came to the first natural barrier and took 3 brook and 1 bow from the pool... we went on up and then it was all brookies ....all small 4-6 inches but beautiful colored fish ... about 3pm saw a flat area above the creek took a look and found a trail... we followed the trail back out to were it crossed thunderhead which i belive is a short ways above the thunderhead sams split ...fished a small pool and caught the most brillant colored rainbow i have ever seen ... we finished heading out and i kinda timed it.... coming out we were only up the trail to sams where i stopped fishing about 45 min from the steel beam bridge... decided to walk up lynn prong trail and see the casscades... fished a bit above them but only 1 bow ...headed out and home to crossville about 6pm...tackle of the day green weenie dropped behind a beetle indicator on 6x tippet...it was a great day all in all

I caught my first brook trout up Sam's Creek. It's a great spot that you can get to quickly and catch a lot of brook trout. By the way thanks for a great report.

    fm62m,

The one time I've been to Sams Creek I went exactly the way you did, from the mouth of the creek on Thunderhead on up. While the trail (Defeat Ridge Trail) gets you there much faster, fishing up from the mouth is something everyone ought to do once. There's no way to get up along the bank because of all the undergrowth but it's a great stream below and above the waterfalls. And the brookies were willing the one time I went. Hope to get back up there again before the year's out.

    Great report. Thanks.

You need to hike up Sam's creek trail early spring before everything greens up. The trail crosses the stream several times as you head up to the confluence with Starkey creek. Its hard to follow it unless you know where to cross.
The acid depo team used to go up quarterly for sampling. Lots of nice pools along the way. I believe it was about a 1.5 hour up to the old backcountry site and the confluence from the parking lot.

I know that hike to the old campsite is a hump! Had some nice days up there sampling that creek though and saw a bear up there on several occasions. I need to fish it, now that it is open.
Some slick boulders up there, I remember that very well. Never had to worry about the water being too warm up there though.
    Best,

    Default sams water

    greetings-
I too was up on sam's creek a few days ago. the hike up the boulders was awesome! any rock-hopping fiends need to go there immediately. had a little luck fishing a stimulator and a yellow caddis fly. a couple of small brooks but not much else. had more action from the small, shaded pools. no takers from the larger pools. nice salamanders along the rocks as well. great place. can't wait to return...with shin guards.
